3. Range

Most powers of Magic have a maximum reach of around thirty feet or ten strides of a running man. This gives little margin for error when using your powers on an angry enemy. Indeed it is entirely possible to unleash your powers too late, or more frequently, too early.

The proper range to hit an opponent with a hostile damaging spell such as Magic Missile is around fifteen feet. This is close enough that his allies may not easily recover him, and yours may step in the finish a wounded foe, or finish his comrades if your target is already downed. It also leaves a comfortable margin of safety for yourself in case the foe is immune or resistant to your magics.

The Proper Range to hit an opponent with a purely disabling strike such as Strikedown is within Ten feet, or as close as possible without exposing yourself to an enemy strike. This allows friendly troops to easily see the enemies’ predicament and administer a killing blow while they are impaired. Any further and you have wasted your spell, it should be noted that friendly troops should be berated if they do not step forwards to finish affected foes as in this case They have wasted your spell!

With less obvious spells one should always consider the maxims of determining proper range, Too close and an enemy may strike you before your casting is complete, possibly killing your in the progress, but too far away and many spells are useless against a foe, save to advertise your position and irritate the foe.
