7. Fundamental Magic
Powers of the First Rank
Countermagic
I call upon the powers of Life, Spirit and Elements and defy that spell. Countermagic!
Range: 30 ft
Effects: This spell must be cast at any time during, or immediately after, the casting of the spell to be countered to have an effect. It can be used to defy any Rank 1 spell against a target that is within range. This cannot be used to counter another Countermagic spell or any Rank 2 or higher spell.
Uses: The uses of Countermagic are discussed above, however, it bears remembering that Countermagic only affects spells of the First Rank, and one should remember which these are! It is also relevant to know which spells are worth Countering, for example, a Fool making a Mage drop his sword should be blasted with a Magic Missile not countered…
Detect Magic
I call upon the powers of Life, Spirit and Elements to reveal to me the magical nature of this object.
Duration: Instantaneous. Range: 1 ft
Effects: This spell may be cast upon a single object which is in view and will reveal whether it is magical, also if the magic is predominantly of one Sphere or mixed. The casting of this spell requires close examination of the object of interest. Detect magic only reveals this information to the caster. Onlookers, even other magic users, will only know if told or if they cast the spell themselves.
Uses: Bear in mind with this spell that you can also effectively identify an item as magical by attempting to cast several of our more offensive spells upon it, however out of combat this spell can be useful for evaluation of salvage amongst other things.
Powers of the Second Rank
Counterspell
I call upon the powers of Life, Spirit and Elements and defy that spell. Counterspell!
Range: 30 ft
Effects: This spell must be cast at any time during, or immediately after, the casting of the spell to be countered to have an effect. It can be used to defy any Rank 1 or 2 spells against a target that is within range. This cannot be used to counter another Countermagic or Counterspell, or spells of a power greater than Rank 2.
Uses: As for Countermagic there is a section on this spells effective use above, and again as for Countermagic know when and what to Counterspell and don’t waste one on a First Rank spell or an ineffectual cast.
