Cadet Jane Cobb

Years ago, the lord of a fairly small fiefdom in the middle of Albion had the bright idea of increasing his revenues by levying a tax on all males, both adult and children, in his domain. The peasants, being no more keen on this idea than you would expect them to be, took to giving all of their children girls' names, and dressing them as girls. The practice stopped when the lord gave up on his tax scheme, but it left a generation of confused young men.

Jane Cobb had lived a fairly unexceptional existence, apart from the frequent tavern fights when someone commented on his name. Physically a bit tougher than average, he made a living of sorts as a hired muscle, working as a caravan guard, bouncer, and eventually a spell in the City Watch in Santia.

He had an ability to heal quickly that he tended to keep very quiet about. His secret came out during a bar fight with a Santia Academy cadet named McGonagal when his arm was broken. Without thinking, Jane healed the wound then picked uo a chairleg to bend around McGonagal's ear. Looking around, he saw people staring at him and heard one say, "Someone should let the Old Man know".

Next morning several things happened. Firstly he was dismissed from the City Watch for brawling and drunkenness. Then he was taken before the magistrate, charged with affray and sentenced to military service. Finally he was conscripted into the Arcane Tempest as a cadet.

Strangely, the life seems to agree with him. He has learned to use his healing abilities more effectively, and also how to use a sword. He has even learned to control his temper when someone laughs at his name. He even got made Cadet Corporal in charge of the Class of '07. Proudly he led his little band of cadets to Cornwall for their final field exercise.....
