Ex Merchant Navy (Chief Petty Officer). Was recruited by Coleman Gunn after Gunn heard sailors stories about a crewman who managed to repel a giant squid that was intent on 'coupling' with the ship by making "fire fly from his hands "
The actual incident was far more mundane ... (sailors stories being a little exagerated over time)... O'Connor was actually cleaning the hull of the ship whilst suspended on a rope. A dead jellyfish brushed against his foot and he panicked, magic missled the fish... and it exploded (showering a crewmate with burning jellyfish guts)
The stories were told and re-told by various crewmates, until the final story that Gunn heard involved O'Connor swinging through the ship's rigging whilst carrying a knife in his teeth, vaulting onto the giant squid's back and making it's head explode with his firey touch before thrusting the knife into it's brain.
